The correct way to apply skincare products

The correct way to apply skincare products

After a significant amount of time spent on trial and error, in attempts to determine which products work best for your skin type, applying those products should be easy enough right? I mean, how difficult can it be?

Well, it isn’t as straightforward as it might appear to you. Yes, figuring out skincare can sometimes seem more overwhelming than rocket science, but I can assure you that the end results are worth it.

Not only is the correct order of skincare application an absolute game changer, the technique of applying each product is different and with good reason. Some need patting, while others massaging, and getting the application process right can make the products more effective, helping you transform your skin immensely.

So even if you’re put off by having to figure out yet another thing before you can have the skin of your dreams, keep on reading. I can assure you, beautiful and flawless skin is worth everything!

We’ll be discussing the correct order of applying skincare products along with the technique at each step so don’t forget to make notes. It’s about to get serious and full of information right about now!

Step 1: Cleansing

If it wasn’t obvious enough, cleansing the skin comes before everything else! You need to remove all the makeup, dirt and grime before applying anything on to your skin. We recommend the double cleansing method as it ensures getting rid of all the impurities that would otherwise hamper and hinder proper skincare.

First use an oil based cleanser to melt and dissolve all the makeup, following up with a water based cleanser for a job done well. Start with the eye area first and get it out of the way as it is super sensitive and you don’t want to rub it along with the rest of your face.

Technique

Apply the oil based cleanser onto dry skin and massage it in a circular motion for a few minutes. Rinse it off. Now apply the water based cleanser on to damp skin allowing the product to emulsify. Use warm water to help open up the pores a little bit, as this ensures getting all the impurities out. Use the same circular motion to apply the water based cleanser, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies like the sides of your nose. Let it sit on the skin for a minute or two before washing it off. Pat the skin dry.

Step 2: Toner

Toning is an underrated step in a skin care routine but can be a game changer. Not only does it help to remove any residual impurities, it helps to balance the skin’s pH levels and hydrate it.

Technique

The best way to determine the correct application process of a toner is to read the instructions on the back. Some can be spritzed directly onto the face or applied using cotton pads, while others make the most difference when massaged directly into the skin.

When using a cotton pad, sweep it across the face and neck, making sure to go in an upward direction. When using your hands, gently press it into the face for best results.

Step 3: Serum

Now onto the good part. A facial serum, especially like the one at Leovard, with the goodness of aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, green tea, chamomile and lavender, can help fight early signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines, give the skin an instant glow as well as brightening, along with a plump and supple appearance. A point to note here is that a serum should always be applied before a moisturizer as the latter has a thicker consistency and applying a serum after it will render it pointless as it won’t be able to absorb into the skin.

Technique

Take a few drops of the product into the palm on your hands and pat it onto the skin, smoothing it outward and upwards. Resist any urge to massage, instead let it absorb into the skin on its own.

Step 4: Moisturizer

A moisturizer seals the goodness of all the products applied before, preventing transepidermal water loss. It hydrates, plumps and gives the skin a soft and smooth texture.

Technique

Taking a generous amount into your hands, apply the moisturizer by gently massaging it into the skin. Make sure to use an upward and outward motion, moving from the center of your face towards the temples. Don’t forget your chin and neck area!

Step 5: Lip balm

Our lips are prone to becoming thin, chapped and shriveled. Therefore, a hydrating lip balm can keep them looking supple and plump, especially if it contains a humectant like the hyaluronic acid found in the Leovard Lip Luster.

Technique

Simply glide the tube all over the lips and reapply throughout the day.

Step 6: Sunscreen

Despite being an absolute must, sunscreen is something people often skip, not realizing that it can help prevent early aging, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots as well as skin cancer. It should be the last step of your routine as it is a protective layer.

Technique

The application technique of a sunscreen is similar to a moisturizer’s.

Takeaway

The order of application, as well as the technique makes all the difference when it comes to making the most out of your skincare routine. So not only is figuring out the right products important, but so is mastering the order and the correct application process to be able to see the best results!
